The UMD Club Swim Team is a place for swimmers of various skill levels to come together to practice, compete, and socialize with one another.
The practice schedule may vary slightly from semester to semester. Our practice schedule is: Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs from 8:30-10:00pm and Sunday from 4:00-6:00pm. Practices are not mandatory, but you are encouraged to attend. We have one officer assigned to coach each practice, but anyone is able to coach a practice or submit workouts if they desire. We try to have multiple sets available at each practice to accommodate both recreational and advanced swimmers. Yardage typically ranges between 3,000 and 4,000 yds.
To be considered an active member, you must:
1) Pay dues (currently $35 per semester)
2) Fill out all required RecWell forms
3) Earn 5 fundraising points
We typically travel to 2 to 3 meets a semester in addition to hosting our own invitational each semester. We generally compete against other club teams at local colleges and universities such as UVA, JMU, UDel, Princeton, and Loyola, among others. We also try to attend at least one overnight meet a semester. In mid-April, we also attend the Collegiate Club Swimming National Championship held at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. This meet does have qualifying times (unlike our other meets), but a qualifying time is not required to attend. All meets are invitational style and include 50s and 100s of all strokes as well as the 100 and 200 IM and 200 and 500 free or 200s non-free. Swimmers are able to select which events they want to swim at the meets through orgsync.
We are a self-sustaining team which means all members are required to participate in some of the many fundraising opportunities we do throughout the year. We work concessions at basketball games and earn a portion of the money made for our team (we get free food and it's great team bonding!). Other fundraising opportunities will be announced throughout the year. The current fundraising requirement to be considered an active member is 5 'points' per semester. Concessions are worth 2 points each (fewer for coming late or leaving early) and all other fundraisers are 1 point.
All members must pay dues at the beginning of the year. They are typically $70 for the year and $35 if you join in the Spring semester. Dues cover your meet entry fees, travel costs, a team t-shirt, and a team cap. Additional team apparel can be ordered for an additional cost and will be announced when available.
Since Club Swim is such a large team, we host several social events each semester to help members get to know one another better. These typically include barbecues on the Washington Quad on South Campus, pizza parties, team dinners at Noodles & Co. before meets, a holiday gift exchange, and a Formal at the end of the Spring semester. Participation in these events is optional, but highly encouraged.
Club Swim asks members to participate in various service events that allow us to give back to the community. For example, we participate in the MSP Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy Point State Park which raises money for Maryland Special Olympics. We also form a team for UMD Relay for Life which raises money for the American Cancer Society. Some members also volunteer with KEEN (kids enjoy exercise now) swim events in the local DC area which assists developmentally and physically disabled youth. Participation in these events is optional, but highly encouraged.
